Cold Plunge Chiller for a 100-Gallon Tub: What Size Actually Matters?

A sizing framework for 100-gallon cold-plunge tubs based on heat load, insulation, ambient temperature and desired cooldown time.

A 100-gallon tub is large enough that chiller sizing should start with heat load rather than a horsepower label. The same chiller can behave very differently in a shaded insulated tub at 72°F ambient versus a dark tub sitting outdoors at 100°F.

Start with the four variables that drive the load

  • Water volume: roughly 100 gallons means about 834 lb of water before the user enters.
  • Temperature drop: cooling from 70°F to 45°F is a 25°F pull-down.
  • Ambient heat: hot air and solar load continuously add heat back.
  • Insulation: insulated walls and lids reduce the maintenance load after initial cooldown.

For a 100-gallon setup used in a hot garage or outdoors, the practical bottleneck is usually not whether the chiller can eventually reach the target. It is whether it can reach it in an acceptable number of hours and then maintain it without running continuously.

Use manufacturer cooling rates as reality checks

Plunge lists its 105-gallon All-In at 10–12°F of cooling per hour and its 105-gallon Air at 8–10°F per hour with the Pro Chiller. Those numbers show why matching chiller, tub, insulation and airflow matters more than comparing horsepower in isolation.

Rule: if you are sizing for a hot climate, choose around the worst realistic afternoon conditions, not the average indoor temperature.

What to verify before buying

Check dedicated-circuit requirements, minimum setpoint, maximum ambient rating, hose/port compatibility, required ventilation clearance, pump flow requirements and whether sanitation is integrated or external. A chiller that is powerful on paper but starved for airflow can underperform badly.
