Ice vs Chiller Cost for a Cold Plunge: Where Is the Break-Even?

The economics depend almost entirely on frequency. Someone plunging twice a month can tolerate recurring ice purchases far longer than someone plunging every morning.

Model both sides honestly

For ice, use bags per session × price per bag × sessions per month. For a chiller, use purchase price plus electricity, filters, sanitation consumables and any pump or plumbing components.

Also assign value to time. Buying, transporting and lifting ice is operational friction. A chiller converts some of that recurring labor into upfront capital cost and maintenance.

Insulated tubs change the answer

Ice Barrel lists both the 300 and 500 as insulated and chiller-ready. Better insulation reduces the amount of ice needed per session and also reduces chiller maintenance load, so insulation improves both strategies rather than automatically favoring one.
