1/3 HP vs 1/2 HP Cold Plunge Chiller
How to compare 1/3 HP and 1/2 HP chillers without treating horsepower as a complete performance spec.
Horsepower is useful shorthand, but it is not a standardized measure of whole-system cooling performance. Two 1/2 HP units can differ in heat exchanger efficiency, pump flow, refrigerant design, fan capacity and control logic.
When 1/3 HP can be enough
A well-insulated 50–80 gallon tub indoors, used at moderate target temperatures, can impose a relatively small maintenance load. In that scenario a smaller chiller may be adequate if you are comfortable with slower initial cooldown.
Why 1/2 HP creates more margin
Moving up a size generally gives you more pull-down capacity and more reserve for warm ambient conditions. That margin matters when the tub sits in a garage, sunroom or outdoor space, or when users refill with warm tap water frequently.
Compare these instead of horsepower alone
